Chelso A. Maghetti - 1946 (Covell)
Maghetti came to Davis in 1919. He served as Postmaster from 1927–36. In 1935 he purchased the Davis Enterprise from Judge Scott, and he continued publication for 25 years. McBride, in introducing Maghetti, said, “he took an active part in all of the organizations working for the betterment of this community and county.” [Friday July 5, 1946 Enterprise]
A dedicated supporter of the Davis community, Mr. Maghetti campaigned successfully for construction of the Davis City Hall and Fire Department and in 1938 had the satisfaction of commissioning the Grand Lodge of California Masons to come and lay the building’s cornerstone [at the southeast corner of 3rd and F Streets in Downtown Davis].
The community is also in his debt for his efforts to preserve the only complete file of the Davis Enterprise. Fearing that the back issues might be destroyed during the early days of World War II, he placed them in the University library on the Davis campus for safekeeping.
Recent microfilming of the entire collection [mid-’60s] now makes these valuable records accessible to all who have an interest in the community’s early development.
