Gray Rowe – 1950 (Covell)
Rowe was awarded “the coveted C.A. Covell Citizenship award in recognition of his civic leadership and contributions to the welfare of Davis.” The Enterprise related what Mrs. Perry said about Rowe’s services to the city:
—July 4th celebration General Chairman 1949;
—Helped to promote and participated in the annual Christmas tree lighting project in the Davis business district; outstanding in supplying labor and trucks annually for the erection of the downtown Christmas tree
—Member, Lions Club
—Member, City Planning Commission
—Member, Davis Volunteer Fire Department
—Chairman, Red Cross Drive Chairman 1950
—Director, Chamber of Commerce for two years
—Chairman of numerous decoration committees for City events, including floats, stands and hall decorations
In a 1979 Enterprise article on DHS athletes, he was cited as being “perhaps Davis High’s greatest athlete.” He was on the new high school’s first football team in 1929, which wore old uniforms contributed by the University. In 1931 his team beat Esparto 92–0, a game in which Rowe, known as “Greyhound,” made 4 of the 15 touchdowns.
