Schiedt was selected because of her outstanding contributions in the field of environmental and conservation education.
Over 25 years she has demonstrated consistent, perpetually cheerful and enthusiastic volunteerism in a wide variety of nature-related activities. This included everything from board positions (including president), to field trip leader, lecturer, newsletter editor/writer, fundraiser wherever there was a need, all this while holding a full-time job.
Her activities were particularly extensive in the following:

—Yolo Audubon Society
—Yolo Basin Foundation
She has also been deeply involved in:

—Lodi Crane Festival
—Yolo Co Parks, Rec & Wildlife Adv Com

—Central Valley Birding Symposium and many more.
