Percy E. Symens - 1959 (Covell)


Symens came to Davis in 1936 and was with UCD’s Ag Engineering until 1952, when he left to become a Davis businessman.  “He has the complete confidence and admiration of all those who know him,” stated the reporter.

—Active member of the volunteer Fire Department where he headed the first rescue squad, trained firemen to use life-saving equipment and taught first-aid classes.  He became chief of the department and remained a member until the paid department took over

—Spent many years in Scouting

—Helped make the first street Christmas lights with aid of Ed Markham

—One of the first organizers of Davis Little League, put in hundreds of hours designing, building the Little League diamond

—Employed many DHS boys with good pay, but requires that each student’s school work be kept up as a condition of employment

—Charter member, Lions Club, but had to resign because of a Monday night conflict with his Boy Scout work

—Member of the Rotary Club

—First president, Quarterback Club

—Worked very hard on the construction of the Girl Scout cabin

—Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
